Description

I have been asked to sell a large collection of vintage fish decoys with many outstanding decoys, so look for more I will be selling over the coming weeks and months. This vintage working fish decoy was made by Vernon Baggs (1925-1985), who had a very recognizable style. Baggs was from Kalkoska, Michigan and his decoys are noted in and displayed in The Fish Decoy, Volume II and III, by Art, Brad and Scott Kimball. This decoy, painted in the colors of a shiner or other baitfish is 9-inches in length and weighs about 4 ounces. The decoy has a multiple line tie, painted eyes and gills, and painted metal fins, plus a belly cavity with poured lead. The decoy is believed to be an older decoy of Baggs, possibly made in the 1960's, and it shows signs of age such as scraped paint and rust on the fins and residue on the body, plus dents and scrapes.
