Highly Collectible and Rare to find Large size sculpture on black marble base, size is about 15 inches in height x 6” W VINTAGE 1950's to 60's SCULPTURE (Signed G. Ruggeri) of Italian Greek Roman The Dancing Faun Satyr - Signed on the back of the stepped pedestal base, “G. Ruggeri”, this EXTREMELY RARE PIECE probably dates to the 1950s-1960s, and has a wonderful, aged, ivory patina to it. The statue is made out of oxolyte which is pulverised marble and resin. I think oxolyte is now known as bonded Carrara Marble which comes from the Northern Italian quarry of Carrara. The marble resin and the sculpture ages gracefully, attaining a lovely warm patina that resembles ivory This dancing faun is now more precisely identified as a satyr. Satyrs are roguish figures from ancient mythology and literature known for their love of wine, music, and mischief. This satyr holds metal cymbala in his hands and wears a kroupezion attached to his sandal. This is a device with a metal plate that would have made a noise rather like a modern tap shoe. His ‘faun’ features are visible in the tiny horns above his forehead, and in the small goat’s tail at his rear. His head is bent over, absorbed by the music, and every muscle of his athletic body seems tensed as he plays; from his deltoid muscles to his abdomen, and down to his calves.
