A fine original marble sculpture of a crouching female figure by American sculptor Eugene Gauss (1905-1988). A unique piece, hand carved from a solid block of chisel textured white statuary marble. The piece measures 9 1/2 x 9 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches, weighs approx. 25 lbs and is signed with the artist's chiseled surname. The piece shows some grime and could be left with it's patina or scrubbed to a bright white, condition is excellent. Eugene Gauss (1905-1988) was a Modernist American sculptor known for one of a kind sculptures in stone. Born Eugen Gauss in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, little is known of his early life. At the age of 22, already a sculptor, he emigrated to the United States and settled in Newark, New Jersey in 1927. Gauss became a member of the art group "The Dialists" and exhibited with them at the Newark Museum and the Montclair Art Museum, also a member of the "Painters & Sculptors of New Jersey" and exhibited at the Jersey City Museum. In 1941,1942 and 1960, he exhibited sculpture at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
