I have been asked to sell a large collection of vintage fish decoys with many outstanding decoys, so look for more I will be selling over the coming weeks and months. This 8.25 inch fish decoy is carved in the shape of a bass, but has a patriotic red, white, and blue American flag paint job. This beautiful fish decoy was certainly intended a piece of folk art rather than a working decoy, but it does have a line tie and is weighted with lead poured in the belly in two spots. The fins appear to be made of spinner blades commonly used in fishing lures, and they have each been repeatedly indented by the point of a nail or similar sharp object to add a pattern to each blade The eyes are painted and the paint is thickened so they are slightly raised over the flat finish of the rest of the decoy. An interesting feature of the decoy is its widely carved, open mouth. This is a unique and eye-catching folk art piece from the 1980's or 1990's and has been in the collection since 2002.
