Description
For sale is an exceptionally well carved circa 1900 sculpture of a beauty young lady. The sculpture is carved white alabaster and sits on a sienna marble base. The artist has done an exceptional job at capturing her poignant mood and her delicate feminine features. Her hairstyle being a popular late Victorian style up in buns with hair wraps and parted at the front. The sculpture is signed on the back in what looks like the name Sutuer (Lutuer??) but we are unsure. (SEE PICS) We did find a similar sculpture with that similar signature along with the same Henry Schumacher foundry mark as on this sculpture. This sculpture with the incised metal foundry mark of Henry Schumacher (1888-1948). on the bottom. Research shows that Schumacher had a foundry in Vienna, Austria from the late 19th century to the earlier turn of the 20th century. We have found that foundry mark on many alabaster sculptures as well as bronze and ivory sculptures from that foundry. The date is hard to discern. A??? (See Pic) We believe this sculpture to be a Vienna Austria sculpture, but we are unsure. Condition: The sculpture in overall very fine condition. Having surface patina frim age and handling. Would benefit from a light cleaning We've included a picture of a similar sculpture with the similar signature in our picture section.
