Description
Seasons Greetings, The passion for nativity scenes really blossomed during the Baroque. As a means of "illustrating belief", lavish and valuable scenes were designed and made, under the guidance of Jesuits, and then set up in churches. In time, smaller but equally valuable examples were setup in townhouses and farms. Dating back to the year 1787 and carved from a sole piece of alabaster, this infant Jesus still displays much of the original pigments of blue, red, brown, silver and gold. The antique sterling silver (tested) halo crown is not original to this sculpture but compliments this piece perfectly. (Not affixed) 2 holes were drilled on the underside at a later date to give the option of displaying on a wall. (If you wish to utilize that option, I would strongly advise to replace the leather strip used for hanging as it appears to have cracked) Do not miss your opportunity to own this incredibly exquisite centerpiece to a Nativity Scene. This would make a great addition to a serious collector of historic Christmas / Religious art. Approximately 8.5" x 4.25" x 3.75" Marked on the underside: "AD MDCCLXXXVII SLN RF(?)" Merry Christmas and God Bless
