Rape of the Sabines ARTIST: after Giambologna TITLE: Rape of the Sabines PERIOD: 19th century (after the 16th century original) STYLE: Italian Renaissance, late Mannerist DESCRIPTION: An impressive and beautiful carved alabaster rendition of the famous Rape of the Sabines sculpture by Giambologna (completed c. 1583). This towering group of figures is exquisitely carved and shows incredible skill in anatomical and spatial rendering. Gorgeous bodies and faces, beautiful from every angle. MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES: Carved alabaster SIGNATURE: None found PLACE OF ORIGIN: Italy, most likely CONDITION: Three hands have mostly broken-off fingers. Patina of age and environment all over. Scuffs and scratches. DIMENSIONS: 27" high, base about 6 5/8" by 6 3/4" ***This sculpture has an additional base (VERY heavy, gray marble) too heavy to ship alongside the figures, and not in great condition.
